SAFF Women's Championship: India to face Bangladesh in finals

2016 SAFF Women's Championship

Hosts and defending champions, Indian women's football team will be up against Bangladesh in the finals of SAFF Women's Championships in Siliguri, West Bengal.

Bangladesh had defeated Maldives 6-0 in the semi-finals on Monday.

While India has reached the finals three times before, it will the first for Bangladesh.

The finals will be played on 4 January 2017.

The South Asian Football Federation Women's Cup is a football tournament for the women's national football teams of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are the members of SAFF and compete with each-other in the tournament held every two years since 2010.

India has won all the three editions, in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Fourth edition of SAFF Women's Championship in India

The fourth edition of the SAFF Women's Championships would take place from 26 December 2016 to 04 January 2017 at Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, West Bengal. The tournament would feature seven teams, with Pakistan pulling out in November 2016.

Indian women's football team defeated Nepal's women's team 3-1 in the semi finals of the SAFF Women's Championships.

The three Indian goals game from Yumnam Devi in the 45th, Indumathi Kathiresan in the 50th and Sasmita Malik in 83rd minute.

Earlier, India had a 5-1 win over Afghanistan in the first group match, while the second match with Bangladesh had ended in a draw.

Nepal's Sabitra Bhandari highest scorer of the tournament

With 12 goals from four matches, Nepal's Sabitra Bhandari is the highest goal scorer of the tournament. She is followed by Bangladesh's Sabina Khatun and Maldives' Fadhuwa Zahir, with five goals each. India's Yumnam Devi has scored three goals so far.

Indian women won a fourth straight SAFF football championship beating Bangladesh 3-1 in the final, in Siliguri.

India took the early lead in first half, with an opener from Dangmei Grace, while Sirat Jahan Shopna scored the equalizer for Bangladesh.

The second goal for hosts came when Sasmita Malik converted the spot kick. Indumati Kathiresan wrapped up the game by netting the third goal.
