The southpaw wants Rohit at the helm to ease the pressure on Virat Kohli, who is leading India across all three formats.
Yuvi said if Kohli is feeling overloaded, then Team India should try out Rohit as skipper in T20Is.
Rohit has shown his captaincy credentials
Rohit is the vice-captain in limited-overs and has been the most successful captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL), leading Mumbai Indians to four title wins.
He had a successful stint as Indian captain when Kohli was rested for various series.
Veteran Yuvraj said it won't be a bad idea for India to try out split captaincy and make things easier for Kohli.
Yuvi wants to ease out Kohli's responsibilities
Yuvraj highlighted Rohit's success and feels he can be T20I skipper.
"Earlier there used to be just two formats - ODI and Tests - so it was perfect to have one captain. Now there are three formats and if Virat is feeling overloaded, maybe they should try somebody else for the T20 format. Rohit has been a very successful captain," Yuvraj told Aaj Tak.
It completely depends on how the management thinks: Yuvraj
Yuvi also said it's the team management's call to decide on Kohli's workload.
He said the management should decide the path for the future.
"I don't really know. They [team management] have to decide how much workload Virat can take. Do they need to try somebody else for T20? It completely depends on how they want to go for the future," he added.
Management needs to make a call on split captaincy
Earlier, post the 2019 World Cup, reports had claimed the BCCI was mulling over split captaincy.
However, nothing of this sort materialized as Kohli was backed to lead the team across formats.
With the ICC World T20 in 2020, the management needs to make a call on whether it should opt for Rohit and ease Kohli's burden.
Both are tremendous leaders.
How has Rohit performed as a captain?
Rohit has led the Indian team in Kohli's absence in the last couple of years.
His best moments came when India sealed the T20 Nidahas Trophy and the 2018 ODI Asia Cup in UAE.
He was praised for his calming head and ability to analyze situations.
He looked like a natural leader and that benefited India as they gave rest to Kohli.
