Big guns Arsenal and Manchester United suffered defeats, whereas, fellow Premier League club Wolves were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw to advance.
There were wins for FC Porto and Celtic as well.

Arsenal are winless in seven matches across all competitions. It's their longest winless run since February 1992.
Arsenal were unbeaten in their previous 46 matches across all competitions when leading at half-time before this match.
Sevilla, who beat Qarabag FK, maintained their 100% record in the Europa League to notch 15 points in Group A.
They are now the first Spanish side in the Europa League to get five wins from five group matches.
Celtic haven't lost any of their first five group games in Europe for the first time after beating Rennes, who have lost four consecutive matches.
Group G has produced the most thrills and excitement.
All four teams are in fray for qualification and things will go down the wire in gameweek 6.
Rangers, who drew 2-2 against Feyenoord, stay atop with eight points.
FC Porto's 2-1 win sees them climb up to second (7 points).
Young Boys are also on seven points with Feyenoord being on five.
