India Open badminton: Sameer Verma goes past fourth seed

The 2017 India Super Series

Sameer Verma shocked fourth seeded Korean Son Wan Ho in the first round of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open badminton tournament in New Delhi.

Verma won the match 21-17, 21-10 in a 45 minutes contest.

Srikanth Kidambi also advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating China's Zhao Junpeng 21-19, 21-16.

The Yonex-Sunrise India Open is an annual badminton tournament played in India, the inaugural edition was played in 2008.

While the first three editions of the tournament were designated as the BWF Grand Prix Gold events, it was upgraded to BWF Super Series in 2011.

The tournament is being held at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi since 2011.

Indian winners of the tournament

In 2010, Saina Nehwal clinched the women's singles title, whereas Valiyaveetil Diju and Jwala Gutta picked up the mixed doubles title. Nehwal won her second title in 2015, when the then men's singles event was won by Srikanth Kidambi.

The 2017 edition of the India Open was inaugurated on 28 March at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi. The tournament will go on till 2 April.

India's campaign will be led by Srikanth Kidambi, Sameer Verma, HS Prannoy and BS Sai Praneeth in the men's singles event.

In women's singles, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu will carry India's winning hopes.

Sai Praneeth, Sourabh Verma too advance to second round

Sai Praneeth came back after losing a set to win 16-21, 21-12, 21-19 against Japan's world number 75 Kenta Nishimoto. He will face Taiwan's Chou Tien-chen in the next round. Sourabh Verma advanced to second round after defeating his compatriot HS Prannoy 21-13, 21-16.

Women's singlesSaina, Sindhu have easy first round wins

India's Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu defeated their respective opponents to reach the second round in the women's singles event at the tournament.

Saina defeated Lee Chia-hsin 21-10, 21-17, while Sindhu had an easy 21-17, 21-6 win over India's Arundhati Pantawane.

Rituparna Das set up a second round clash with Spain's Carolina Marin after a hard fought 19-21, 21-15, 21-19 match against Chiang Mei-hui.

01 Apr 2017Sindhu outclasses Saina to enter Indian Open Super Series semi-finals

PV Sindhu defeated Saina Nehwal in the much awaited quarter-finals match of the Indian Open Super Series badminton tournament in New Delhi.

Sindhu won the match 21-16, 22-20 to enter the semi-finals of the tournament, where she will face South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun.

In men's singles, Sameer Verma lost 22-24, 19-21 to Anders Antonsen in the quarter-finals match.
