India Open badminton: Sindhu sets up title clash with Marin

The Sindhu - Carolina rivalry

India's PV Sindhu set up a title clash with Carolina Marin at the India Open Super Series 2017 badminton tournament in the women's singles event.

Sindhu defeated Sung Ji Hyun 21-18, 14-21, 21-14 in a marathon 76-minute semi-final match.

While the Spanish shuttler has an upper-hand over Sindhu, the Indian shuttler will have an advantage of playing in front of the home crowd.

2011-2015First face-off of the champions

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu and Carolina Marin first met in a senior level championship at the 2011 Maldives Challenge, where the 15-year old Indian prevailed over the Spaniard, eventually winning the title.

Since then, they have faced each other five times before meeting at the 2016 Rio Olympics finale.

Of the five meets, Marin went on to win four, while Sindhu won one.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sindhu and Marin played against each other for the gold medal in women's singles event.

It was the then world number one Marin who won the gold medal, leaving Sindhu to bring home a historic silver medal.

Marin won the match 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 and became the first non-Asian woman to win an Olympic gold in badminton.

Dubai World Super Series Finals 2016

After the big match at the Olympics, they both met at the year ending Dubai World Super Series Finals in December. Sindhu avenged her Olympic loss as she defeated Marin 21-17 21-13 in straight games to reach the semi-finals.

The year 2017 started with a clash between the two badminton superstars facing each other at the opening game of the 2017 Premier Badminton League (PBL).

Marin, who played for Hyderabad Hunters outclassed Chennai Smashers' Sindhu 11-8, 12-14, 11-2.

While the tournament had a 11-points set, the clash between the two was the most awaited match of PBL.

On her clash with Marin on Sunday, Sindhu said, "All I can say is it will be good match as we know each other's strong and weak points. We met for the first time at the Rio Olympics, and she denied me the gold medal."

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu clinched her maiden India open Super Series title after defeating top seeded Carolina Marin in the finals at New Delhi.

Sindhu won the match 21-19, 21-16 in 46 minutes.

With this victory going to Sindhu, the win score between the two players is tied at 5-5, with the Indian shuttler defeating Marin in their last two encounters.
