India's PV Sindhu advanced into the second round of the 2017 Badminton Asia Championships at Wuhan, China.

She defeated Dinar Dyah Ayustine of Indonesia 21-8, 21-18 in just 31 minutes.

Sindhu will face Japan's Aya Ohori in the second round match tomorrow.

In other match, Saina Nehwal suffered a 21-19, 16-21, 18-21 defeat against Japan's unseeded player Sayaka Sato.

Formerly known as Asian Badminton Championships, the Badminton Asia Championships is a tournament held for the players of Asia.

It was first played in 1962, but became an annual tournament since 1991.

India's Dinesh Khanna is the sole winner from the country. He won in the men's singles event in 1965.

The 2017 Badminton Asia Championships

The 37th edition of the tournament will be played at Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium, Wuhan in China from 25 to 30 April. It will be the third consecutive time that the tournament is being held at Wuhan.

Ajay Jayaram had to fight for a victory against fifth seeded Tian Houwei from China to win the match 21-18, 18-21, 21-19. He will face Hsu Jen-Hao in the second round of the tournament.

Prannoy Kumar went down against Ng Ka Long 16-21, 21-13, 19-21 in a hard fought three setter men's singles match.

India's men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy lost 9-21, 18-21 in the first round.

Both the women's and mixed doubles pair also lost their respective games to crash out of the tournament leaving Sindhu and Jayaram as India's only hopes.

PV Sindhu stormed into the quarter-finals of the 2017 Badminton Asia Championships after defeating Aya Ohori in the second round.

Sindhu won the match 21-14, 21-15 to set up a quarter-final clash with China's He Bingjiao.

She remained the lone Indian in the tournament after Ajay Jayaram faced a 19-21, 10-21 defeat in the second-round from Chinese Taipei's Hsu Jen Hao.
