Badminton- Srikanth reaches Australia Open semi-finals

2017 Australian Super Series

India's Srikanth Kidambi has reached the semi-finals of the 2017 Australian Open Super Series badminton tournament after he defeated fellow countryman B Sai Praneeth 25-23, 21-17 in an all Indian quarter-finals match.

Srikanth will now meet the winner of second quarter-finals match between H-K Vittinghus and Shi YQ.

He had earlier defeated world number one Son Wan-ho in the second round.

Australian Open is a Super Series level badminton tournament held every year in Australia.

It was first played in the year 1975, but became an annual tournament only from the year 1989.

Saina Nehwal is the only Indian shuttler who has won the Australian Open badminton tournament. She won the women's singles title twice, in 2014 and 2016.

2017 Australian Super Series

The 2017 edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place at the State Sports Centre in Sydney, from 20th to 25th June. The total prize money of the tournament is $750,000.

Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu won their respective round two matches to reach the quarter-finals in the women's singles event.

In the quarters final matches, Nehwal will meet China's Sun Yu, while PV Sindhu is up against Taiwan's world number one Tai Tzu-ying.

No shuttlers from India, in the doubles event, have gone past the second round of the tournament.

India's PV Sindhu lost to top ranked Tai Tzu-ying in the quarter-finals of the 2017 Australia Open Super Series badminton tournament in Sydney.

Sindhu won the first game, but Tai bounced back to win the match 10-21, 22-20, 21-16 in 61 minutes.

With Sindhu out, Srikanth Kidambi and Saina Nehwal are the only Indian shuttlers left in the tournament.

India's Kidambi Srikanth defeated China's Chen Long to lift the 2017 Australian Super Series title in Sydney.

Srikanth won the match 22-20, 21-16 in 46 minutes to register his first career win against Long.

Winning his second Super Series title in two weeks, the 24-year old became the first Indian male badminton player to win the Australia Open title.
