India bag their first gold at World Para Athletics Championships

2017 IPC World Para Athletics Championships

India opened their medal account at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London on the first day, after Sundar Singh Gurjar clinched gold in the men's javelin throw F46 event.

The 21-year old also recorded his personal best effort of 60.36m as he won the top honour.

18-year old Rinku, who participated in the same category, missed the podium place and finished fourth.

AboutWorld Para Athletic Championships

Formerly known as the IPC Athletics World Championships, the World Para Athletics Championships are a biennial athletics event for the athletes with disabilities. The tournament is governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Started in the year 1994, the tournament features athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities.

China has dominated the previous tournaments by winning the most medals in four of the seven championships.

2017 World Para Athletics Championships to take place in London

London is all set to host the World Para Athletics Championships from 14th to 23rd July, a month before the IAAF World Championships. The tournament will see participation from more than 1000 para-athletes competing in 213 medal events.

India have sent a group of 29 para-athletes to compete in 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London. 24 of the athletes are men, while 5 are women.

After a fine performance in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, medal expectations are high from the Indian contingent.

Out of the 29 para-athletes, 28 are ranked in the top 10 world-rankings in their respective events.

Making a comeback after he was disqualified at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, Sundar said, "This gold medal is a great motivation for me to perform even better from here on. I have recovered fully, and will do even better at the Asian Games (next year)."

18 Jul 2017World Para Athletics: Asian record, silver medal for Amit Kumar

India's Amit Kumar Saroha won the silver medal in men's club throw F51 event in the World Para Athletics Championships.

The 32-year old also set a new Asian record with a throw of 30.25m, just 1.74m behind gold medalist Zeljko Dimitrijevic.

Amit Kumar had missed the bronze medal in the 2016 Paralympics by a narrow margin.

Discus thrower Karamjyoti Dalal took India's medal tally to three after she won a bronze medal in Women's F55 category at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

The 30-year old managed a throw of 19.02m in her last attempt to beat Baharain's Alomari Roba's throw of 19.01m.

She is currently ranked eighth in the world.
