German company releases new coin featuring poop. But why?

The world is no stranger to the Germans' love for currywurst.

Currywurst, which is basically curry sauce on bratwurst, was first made in Germany by Herta Heuwer in 1949.

Now, to celebrate the 70 years of the delicacy, a German mint company has released a silver alloy coin featuring Heuwer with the currywurst.

However, the coin has received mixed responses from netizens.

Berlin-based Staatliche Münze Berlin, a mint company that produces 20% of all Germany's euro coins has priced the currywurst coin for €13 or Rs. 1,055.

Some 2,500 such coins are available for coin collectors and sausage fans.

The coin features an image of the savory snack's inventor alongside two giant sausages drowning in curry sauce and pierced with a wooden fork.

Recipe

Heuwer created the recipe for curry sauce unknowingly

Heuwer, who was a Königsberg-born housewife, first opened up a snack stall in West Berlin on September 4, 1949.

As foot traffic was low, Heuwer had time to experiment.

She mixed sweet peppers, paprika, tomato ketchup, and curry powder and served the resulting sauce over a hot sliced, fried bratwurst.

Little did she know back then that she just created a Berlin classic.

The curry sauce in bratwurst got named 'currywurst' and it soon became a sensation for cash-strapped students and tourists.

Each year, around 800 million currywursts are eaten in Germany, according to German Currywurst Museum.

Interestingly, it is also a favorite of Vice Chancellor Angela Merkel and her predecessor Gerhard Schröder.

However, it's yet to catch on globally in the same way.

Death

Heuwer took the recipe with her to the grave

Heuwer died in 1999, taking the recipe with her to the grave. It's said that she didn't even disclose the recipe to her husband.

The stall itself continued to grow, employing 19 women at its height, before closing down in the 1970s.

But, following her death, many other sausage stands and beer halls attempted to make the currywurst and have been successful.

Meanwhile, netizens had a mixed response towards the coin's design.

Bratwurst, which unfortunately also looks similar to poop, faced criticism as the Royal Society called it "a cursed wurst image".

Many others agreed as one said, "You mean it's the wurst thing. I'll show myself out."

But, there were some admirers, as another wrote, "I'm shifting all my savings to currywurst coins."
