Australia has abolished its 457 visa programme which is used by over 95,000 temporary foreign workers, a majority of whom are Indians.
Businesses are allowed to employ foreign workers in skilled jobs for up to four years if there's a shortage of Australian talent under the 457 visa programme.
The 457 programme has been abolished to address growing unemployment within Australia.

Turnbull's visa announcement comes days after his visit to India where he discussed several issues, including national security, counter terrorism, education and energy and signed six bilateral agreements. Australia's decision to tighten its visa regime is similar to that of the Trump administration's.

"We are an immigration nation, but the fact remains: Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs, so we are abolishing the 457 visa," said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
He said a new 'Australians first' approach to skilled migration would be adopted.

Australian government to unveil new visa programme
Turnbull said the 457 visa programme will be replaced by another one.
He said the new programme will be "specifically designed to recruit the best and brightest in the national interest."
The new programme would ensure that Australian employers bring in foreign workers to fill critical skill gaps, not because employers find it easier to hire foreign talent than looking for Australians.

After abolishing visa programme, Australia tightens citizenship norms
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull revealed stricter norms for getting Australian citizenship, on the heels of scrapping the 457 visa regime for foreign workers.
Under the reforms, citizens must be permanent residents for 3 years instead of just 1, and prospective citizens will go through an English test as well.
Applicants are allowed to fail the test just 3 times.

PM Modi brings up visa revamp with Australian PM
Australia's decision to abolish the 457 visa facility, which was useful for many Indians, was met with a strong objection amongst Indians.
On Tuesday, PM Modi raised concerns about the same in his telephonic conversation with Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull.
According to a government statement, the leaders decided to stay in touch over the issue.
