Female freshers at Delhi University's Hindu College were shocked when they were welcomed by a "sexist" poster during the freshers' party last week.
The welcome poster read, "Hindu mein Maal aur Maal dono milta hai," with a cutout of Disney cartoon character Minnie Mouse.
The issue came to light when some agitated students took to social media platforms to circulate the poster.
A female fresher said it was shocking to see such a poster at the campus, which is considered a "center for intellectual and feminist debates."
Another fresher said they didn't expect such a "misogynist" welcome. She questioned how college authorities could allow the use of such statements on the campus.
The college union members who organized the freshers' party said it was an "administrative lapse".
"This is an issue of administrative lapse on the part of the organizers, who should have paid attention to it in good time and got the poster removed. We unanimously condemn the usage of such shamelessly gendered and misogynist phrases on campus or anywhere else."
Some seniors claimed sexist statements are regularly used on the campus.
A third-year English (Hons.) student stated the sexist phrase wasn't a new invention as it has been used by male students for decades.
She added, "They have become so deeply entrenched that students hardly realize the gendered nuances of them."
The college principal, Anju Shrivastava, said she was unaware of such poster.
"I have not been informed of any such poster being used during the freshers' party at the campus as college was closed for a mid-term break soon after it. The use of such language is unacceptable and we will definitely look into the issue."
