Recently, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar had received a lot of flak for some statements that he made seven years ago, while 'defending' co-star Sonakshi Sinha, who had newly entered the industry back then.
The 52-year-old had said that heroines should be hari bhari, and not chusa hua aam.
Notably, Sonakshi had a rough start in Bollywood for not having a typically attractive (?) body.
During the promotions of their 2012 film Rowdy Rathore, Akshay had said, "Sonakshi is a wonderful actress who has her own style of acting. She has an absolutely different figure- a typical, Indian figure and not size zero."
"Khaate peete gharane ki lagti hai. I am a pure Punjabi. I like heroines who are hari bhari. Chusa hua aam na lage," he had said.
Now, Akshay's comments have come under attack by many on social media, who accused him of making misogynistic remarks and objectifying women.
However, Sonakshi has come out in support of Akshay. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the 32-year-old actress said, "Let me start by saying that trolls really have nothing better to do in life, so this is what they resort to."
"People have to understand that I was heavily body shamed at the start of my career, in spite of having lost 30 kilos, and what Akshay said was probably in response to something on the same lines," Sonakshi told the daily.
Further clarifying Akshay's intention, Sonakshi said, "They (trolls) also have to understand that I have a great friendship and working equation with him (Akshay)."
"If anything, he was being a gentleman and defending me with no intention of objectifying anyone. And if I, the person being referred to, has absolutely no problem with what was said, I don't think anyone else should either."
It should be noted that Akshay and Sonakshi have collaborated on several occasions. They have appeared together in films like Rowdy Rathore, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!, Joker, Boss, Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, and Mission Mangal.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Akshay-starrer comedy film Housefull 4 is set to hit the theaters on October 25.
Furthermore, he will also feature in films like comedy-drama Good Newwz, Rohit Shetty-directorial Sooryavanshi, and the 2020 release Laxmmi Bomb.
On the other hand, Sonakshi will soon star opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg 3. She also has Bhuj: The Pride of India in the pipeline.
