Continuing its golden run, Todd Phillips' psychological thriller Joker has now become the highest earning movie based on a DC Comics property in the Indian market, beating the previous record-holder Aquaman in the process.
Additionally, it also recently became the highest-grossing R-rated (certified 'A' in India) film globally, by earning $849 million (about Rs. 6,014 crore) at the box office.
Here are more details.
Apart from India, Joker is now the highest-grossing DC movie in 33 other markets across the world. These include the likes of Argentina, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Russia and Spain, among others.
Meanwhile, Joker is the biggest DC movie of all time in Europe, and fifth globally.
Furthermore, the film is also Warner Bros.' biggest movie in Argentina, Mexico, Russia, and 11 other markets.
Out of the total $849 million, Joker has garnered nearly $278 million (about Rs. 1,966 crore) from US and Canada markets, followed by the UK ($57.6 million), Mexico ($39.8 million), South Korea ($35.9 million), Japan ($32.8 million) and Brazil ($30.2 million).
Moreover, box office analysts predict that the film could collect around $950 million (Rs. 6,729 crore) worldwide, by end of its theatrical run.
Directed by Phillips, Joker is the origin story of the eponymous super-villain and archenemy of the Batman.
It follows the life of Arthur Fleck, a troubled comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in the fictitious Gotham city during the early 1980s.
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and Robert De Niro as an in-film talk show host.
Although the film continues to witness packed auditoriums around the world, it has received mixed reactions from critics and audiences, largely because of its unabashed display of violence. However, the performance from Phoenix has been praised by one and all.
