The company recently introduced a series of changes ruining the main results page, and now, it is doing the exact same thing by hiding dimensions, which showed the size of a photo, from the results page.
Here's all you need to know about it.
Google's main search results page witnessed a small, albeit significant, design change with new 'favicons' appearing next to link titles and ads becoming hard to differentiate.
But, beyond that, the company has also been changing the Image search section.
First, it added a larger side panel to show similar results; then it quietly removed the ability to filter results by 'exact size'.
As it turns out, the action of removing the size filter was just the beginning.
Over the weekend, Google will also begin to remove the dimensions that appear for individual image results.
The size currently appears at the bottom left corner of every photo thumbnail (on hovering over it) to let a user quickly pick the right-sized image from a bunch of many.
Google is removing dimensions to replace them with labels for photos.
Basically, at the exact same corner, Google will show a label telling what kind of photo - product, recipe, video - it is.
For instance, if you're looking at a certain food item, the recipe label would show up. The same would go for purchase-ready products and photos taken from videos, as well.
Google's idea behind this change is to give users a sense of what the image shows, which can help them take appropriate actions.
For instance, if it's a product, they can go ahead and buy it from the seller's website.
This, according to the company, should eventually drive more clicks in the images section and increase the traffic for website owners.
That said, it's worth noting that you can still see dimensions from the side panel. But, for that, you'd have to click on an image result instead of simply hovering over it. It remains to be seen how the public would react to this.
