ICMR

One of the oldest medical research bodies in the world, ICMR was set up in 1911. That time, it was known as Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA). It’s the apex body for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research. Extended as Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Government of India-funded organization has been on the forefront in carrying out researches on various diseases like Covid-19, leprosy, cholera, Ebolavirus, Influenza, Japanese encephalitis, AIDS, malaria, kala-azar, etc. Testing Covid-19 samples is also being done by ICMR, and till now, over 23L samples have been tested. Presided over by the Union Health Minister, ICMR has 30 permanent research institutes/centers, located pan India. It also brings out Indian Journal of Medical Research, an open-access medical publication.
