1452: Leonardo da Vinci’s birth

Italian artist, engineer, and scientist Leonardo da Vinci was born. His birth is celebrated as World Art Day today. He died on May 2, 1519, at age 67. 

1865: Abraham Lincoln assassinated

US President Abraham Lincoln died eight hours after he was shot by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington the day before. 

1912: Titanic

RMS Titanic sinks at 2:27 am off the coast of Newfoundland after striking an iceberg on its maiden voyage. Roughly 1,500 died in the tragedy.

US President George W. Bush announced that the government of Saddam Hussein in Iraq had fallen after the Iraq War.

The Notre-Dame de Paris fire broke out beneath the roof of the cathedral in Paris. The structure sustained damage to its roof and upper walls and its spire had collapsed.
