Walter Hunt received a patent for the safety pin in the United States. Hunt later sold his rights to the fastener for $400.
1857: Mangal Pandey executed
Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment, was hanged to death over mutiny. He was 29.

1985: India files
suit over Bhopal disaster
India filed a lawsuit against Union Carbide over the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, which officially killed over 2,000 people.
