CBSE mandates 3 language policy across India from 2026-27
India
CBSE is rolling out a fresh three-language policy starting with the 2026-27 school year.
The big idea? Get students across India learning more languages and understanding different cultures.
From Class six, you'll need to pick up a third language, and by Classes nine and 10, passing all three will be part of your board exams.
CBSE sets R1 R2 R3 categories
Languages are split into R1, R2, and R3: R1 can be any language CBSE offers, but R2 and R3 must each be different (and at least two should be Indian languages).
For now, existing textbooks will be used for R1 and R2 until new learning materials are developed.
If you're already in Class seven or above, don't worry, you'll have time to meet these requirements by the 2029-30 session.
