Center forms committee to finalize Gorkhaland agreement for Darjeeling region
The Center has just formed a committee to work on a final agreement around the longstanding Gorkhaland demand in Darjeeling and nearby areas.
This move comes after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gorkha leaders, and West Bengal officials, where they discussed the need for a separate identity and a solution within the constitutional framework for the Gorkha community.
Pankaj Kumar Singh to head committee
Retired IPS officer Pankaj Kumar Singh will head the committee, guiding talks toward a solution within the Constitution.
Gorkha leaders say they are committed to finding a peaceful path forward.
BJP MP Raju Bista described it as historic, as it happened on the anniversary of the 1988 Gorkha Accord, a nod to how long this demand has been around.
The Center also promised to consider extra funding for local issues.
