Cyclone Shakti forms over Arabian Sea; Mumbai may just escape

India

Cyclone Shakti—the first named cyclonic storm of the 2024 North Indian Ocean season—has formed over the Arabian Sea.
According to the IMD, it may begin shifting toward Gujarat on October 6, but is not expected to make landfall or have significant impact on the Indian coast.
While Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad will likely just see light, scattered rain through October 8, Palghar could get hit with heavier downpours on that day.

IMD warns of thunderstorms, lightning in Maharashtra

Even though Cyclone Shakti is set to weaken as it nears land (it was about 510km west of Dwarka on October 4), the IMD has warned of moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50km/h in several Maharashtra districts today.
The state government is already prepping disaster management teams and urging people in low-lying or coastal areas to stay alert—just in case things get rough.
