Delhi pushes Yamuna cleanup deadline to 2029

India

Delhi's plan to fully clean up the Yamuna river now has a new target: 2029.
Water Minister Parvesh Verma explained that quick fixes aren't realistic, so the focus is on stopping untreated sewage and polluted drains from reaching the river.
The government is rolling out 32 advanced cleaning machines—some from Finland—starting January, with Najafgarh drain (the biggest polluter) as the main priority.

High-tech machines aim for real results

These machines will dig deep and remove sludge from spots that were tough to reach before, with everything set to be running by March.
The government described this as a significant move toward restoring the Yamuna, emphasizing a commitment to long-term solutions.
