Farmers in Punjab protest penalties for stubble burning
On Wednesday, Punjab farmers and laborers jointly submitted memorandums to all Deputy Commissioners, protesting penalties for stubble burning.
Led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), they also called for the release of ₹109 crore owed by sugar mills and pushed for a higher sugarcane price of ₹470 per quintal.
Farmers demand fairer crop procurement rules
Farmers say they're already under financial stress from poor harvests, floods, and concerns about fertilizer supply and purchasing requirements.
They're asking for fairer crop procurement rules, reliable DAP fertilizer supply, a higher paddy moisture limit, plus compensation for crop losses.
The SKM also opposes new electricity laws and changes to Panjab University's Senate—moves they feel threaten farmer rights and state autonomy.
The protests spotlight growing frustration in rural Punjab and a call for urgent government support.
