Goa nightclub fire: Luthra brothers face serious charges after deadly blaze

India

Saurav and Gaurav Luthra, owners of Birch by Romeo Lane in North Goa, have been charged with culpable homicide and criminal negligence after a tragic fire, believed to have started during a fire show involving fireworks, broke out at their club on December 6, 2024.
The incident left 25 people dead and about 50 injured.
Investigators say the club didn't have up-to-date fire-safety approvals, was running on an expired license from 2024, and used fireworks without proper precautions—all of which made things much worse.

What's happening with the case now?

The Luthra brothers fled to Thailand the day after the fire, were detained there several days later, and deported to India on December 16 with help from Interpol.
They're now in five-day police custody. Goa Police say there are inconsistencies in documents they provided, and that the brothers have been evasive during questioning—often reporting health issues that doctors haven't found evidence for.
A Delhi court judge called the allegations against them "grave and serious," as investigations continue.
