IMD warns India's monsoon likely below average until Sept 2
India's monsoon is falling short this year, with the India Meteorological Department, or IMD, saying we will likely see below-average rainfall until at least September 2.
Rainfall is already 14% lower than usual, and the main monsoon belt is stuck up north: bad news for farmers who count on these weeks to plant their crops.
Skymet forecasts 85% rain, drought risk
Rain has been all over the place: parts of northeast and east India might get drenched, but central India is looking near normal, and Peninsular India may continue to see weak monsoon activity.
Skymet now expects just 85% of normal seasonal rain and warns there is a strong chance of drought ahead.
With El Nino strengthening and global supply chains already shaky, experts say if this dry spell drags on, food prices could climb even higher.
