India blocks satellite services on Chinese satellites: Here's why
India is tightening its space game by blocking satellite services with Chinese connections.
IN-SPACe, the country's space regulator, has denied access to proposals from Chinasat and Hong Kong-based ApStar and AsiaSat.
The main goal? Boosting homegrown satellite capacity and keeping national security front and center.
What's the impact on broadcasters?
Longtime players like AsiaSat now have limited permission in India until March, so broadcasters such as Zee and JioStar are already switching over to Indian satellites like GSAT or approved foreign ones like Intelsat.
Zee, for example, moved all its services off AsiaSat-7 by mid-September 2025.
Going forward, any foreign satellite operator will need the green light from IN-SPACe before offering services in India—part of a bigger push to keep control local and secure.
