India launches fully digital census with full caste count
India just rolled out its first fully digital census after a 16-year break.
Starting April 1, the process uses smartphones and online portals to collect data, making things way faster and more efficient.
For the first time since 1931, there's also a full caste count.
The government hopes this quick access to fresh data will help shape better policies and open up new job opportunities.
Census 2027 app and online option
Census 2027 brings in some major updates, like a mobile app for data collection and an option for people to fill out their information online in 16 languages before anyone visits their home.
The survey happens in two phases: one about housing and amenities, the other focused on caste details.
Covering all 36 states and union territories with over 3 million participants across approximately 6,39,902 villages, it's a huge operation with a budget of ₹11,718.24 crore.
The registrar general says going digital should make everything run smoother than ever before.
