India plans to limit children's social media use
India is looking to set new rules on how much children under 18 can use social media, instead of banning it outright.
The plan splits users into three age groups (8- to 12-year-olds, 12- to 16-year-olds, and 16- to 18-year-olds) with different restrictions for each.
The government expects to bring this proposal to Parliament during the monsoon session.
Proposed rules aim to protect children online
These rules are meant to keep children safer online by limiting screen time and shielding them from harmful content.
Before anything becomes law, the government will ask for public feedback.
While some places have proposed or implemented strict limits on children's social media use, India wants a more balanced approach that's practical for everyone, though tech companies hope the rules will be applied fairly across all states.
