India successfully test-fired 1st 100% indigenous AK-203 assault rifle Sher
Big news for Indian defense tech: India has made and successfully test-fired its very first 100% indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, now called the Sher.
Built at the Korwa factory in Amethi under the Make in India push, this rifle comes from a joint venture between India and Russia that kicked off in 2019.
Sher to replace INSAS rifles
Every part of the Sher was sourced from Indian industries, which IRRPL CEO & MD Maj. Gen. S. K. Sharma calls "100% Genuine Indigenisation."
The Sher has successfully undergone firing, including burst firing, and the initial results are extremely encouraging, and is set for army trials by September 2026.
With plans to make one every 100 seconds, these rifles will soon replace older INSAS models for soldiers, promising better reliability and modern features.
