Indian Railways increases fares after half-decade
Heads up if you travel long distances by train—Indian Railways is set to raise ticket prices starting July 1, 2025.
This is the first fare hike since 2020, and officials say it's meant to help boost revenue while still keeping trips affordable.
If you're taking AC, sleeper, or second-class trains for over 500km, expect a small increase: AC fares go up by 2 paise/km, sleeper by 1 paise/km, and second class by half a paise/km.
Good news for daily suburban commuters with monthly passes—your fares won't change.
Railway expects extra ₹700 crore this year from fare hike
Railways expects this move to bring in an extra ₹700 crore this year, helping them reach a projected income of ₹92,800 crore in FY2025-26.
The extra funds will go toward improving services and infrastructure so that travel remains comfortable and accessible for everyone.
