Jharkhand: 3 family members trampled to death by wild elephants
India
In a heartbreaking incident, three members of a family lost their lives when a herd of elephants broke into their home in Barkipunnu village, Bokaro, around 3am on Thursday.
The elephants, searching for paddy, damaged the house and trampled the victims as they tried to escape.
Efforts on to track herds, keep villages safer
Forest officials said this herd had been roaming nearby for days.
This tragedy follows another recent elephant attack that killed a local vegetable dealer.
With at least 22 people killed by elephants in eastern India since the start of 2026, the state is stepping up efforts—teams and quick response units are now tracking herds to keep villages safer.
Families affected will receive ₹4 lakh compensation per victim as per government rules.
