Kashmir Valley set for rain, snow as winter tightens its grip

India

Kashmir's nights just got a bit less chilly, with temperatures finally rising above freezing—Srinagar hit 0.2°C after days of colder lows.
But a thick fog rolled in on Wednesday, especially around Srinagar and water bodies, making things feel wintry again.

Why bother?

The dry spell that's lingered since early November is about to end: the weather department expects rain and snow on December 20-21, right as Chillai-Kalan—the valley's harshest 40-day winter stretch—begins.
Locals have seen more respiratory issues during this dry patch, so the incoming wet weather could bring some relief (and classic snowy vibes).
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote on X, "Alhamdulillah, this prolonged dry spell in J-K that has persisted since early last month looks like it will finally end this weekend."

What is Chillai-Kalan?

Chillai-Kalan is Kashmir's coldest season, lasting until January 30.
It brings heavy snowfall and biting cold that can disrupt daily life—but also turns the valley into a true winter wonderland.
