Keralam shigellosis spike shows 96% ciprofloxacin and 36% ceftriaxone resistance
India
Keralam is dealing with a serious spike in shigellosis infections that aren't responding to usual antibiotics.
According to KARS-Net, a whopping 96% of recent cases are now resistant to ciprofloxacin, and resistance to ceftriaxone has climbed to 36%.
This makes treating even common stomach infections much tougher than before.
Experts urge responsible antibiotic use
This rise in drug resistance puts young children and older adults at greater risk for severe illness, like dehydration or sepsis.
The June outbreak across Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Wayanad led to 225 cases and six deaths, showing how urgent the problem is.
Experts are urging everyone to use antibiotics responsibly so we don't run out of options for treating everyday infections.
