Lieutenant Governor Saxena announces Thoise, Kargil civilian and commercial flights
Big news for Ladakh: two more airports will soon operate civilian and commercial flights from Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley and Kargil Airport, adding to the region's only current airport in Leh.
Announced by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, this move aims to make travel way easier for locals and tourists alike, opening up Ladakh's stunning landscapes to more visitors.
Thoise upgrades, Kargil inspection scheduled
At Thoise, the Indian Air Force has set aside land for a new civil terminal, with runway upgrades wrapping up by November 2026. Commercial flights could start as soon as December 2026.
Over in Kargil, a joint team will inspect the airport on September 1 to check if it's ready for civilian flights.
These upgrades are expected to boost tourism hotspots like Turtuk and Siachen Base Camp and give local communities better access.
