Lok Sabha passes bill to guarantee rural jobs and better livelihoods

India

Parliament just cleared the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025.
This new law replaces the old rural jobs scheme (MGNREGA) with updated rules designed to boost job security and improve how people in villages earn a living.

Why should you care?

The bill now promises 125 days of paid work per rural household each year (up from 100), plus a break during busy farming seasons without losing those work days.
There's more focus on building lasting things like water systems and climate-friendly infrastructure.
Payments will be quicker, states have to pay an allowance if jobs aren't given, and digital tools will help keep everything transparent—improving accountability and oversight in the scheme.
