Maharashtra government revokes 3-language policy GRs
Maharashtra has rolled back its rule making Hindi compulsory for classes 1-5 in Marathi and English medium schools, following protests involving multiple parties and figures, including Uddhav Thackeray.
The original plan, announced in April, was tweaked in June to let students pick another Indian language if at least 20 wanted it—but now the whole mandate is off the table.
Why the original plan faced backlash
This move is a big deal for students and parents who want more say over what languages are taught.
Many felt forcing Hindi could threaten regional languages and cultures.
Now, with a new review panel led by Dr. Narendra Jadhav, the state is signaling that no student should be pushed into learning a language they don't want—showing respect for linguistic diversity and local identity.
