Maharashtra government to amend School Fee Regulation Act

India

Maharashtra is set to update its school fee law after parents pushed back against steep fee hikes. The new rules will scrap the old requirement that at least 25% of parents must complain before action is taken. Instead, fees will be based on actual local costs, similar to what Gujarat does, aiming for more transparency and fairer pricing.

Key changes in the revised law

Now, even a single parent can flag unfair fee increases—no need for a big group. Schools will have to clearly explain any hike linked to infrastructure upgrades. These changes come after legal battles over schools breaking the rules and not involving parents in decisions. The revised law will also cover all types of schools—including government ones—and even coaching classes, so everyone's on the same page when it comes to fees.
