Maharashtra transport department issues notices to 777 drivers over Marathi
Maharashtra's Transport Department just handed out notices to 777 taxi and rickshaw drivers for not knowing enough Marathi.
This happened after a statewide check from August 20-22, where 5,211 drivers, mostly in Mumbai, were tested as part of the Marathi requirement that was already in force, with enforcement beginning after the August 15 deadline for drivers to learn functional Marathi.
Drivers given month to improve Marathi
Drivers now have a month to brush up on their Marathi or risk losing their licenses, according to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.
This is all part of the state's push to make Marathi more common among taxi, autorickshaw, and app-based cab drivers.
Earlier this year, a big campaign trained and certified about 165,000 drivers in basic Marathi, and now RTO teams are testing language skills at busy transport hubs, with everything being video recorded for proof.
