Meghalaya forms SIT after Khasi Students's Union rally turns violent
Shillong saw major unrest on August 19 when a black-flag motorcycle rally by the Khasi Students's Union (KSU) spiraled into violence: think stone pelting, arson, and attacks on Assam-registered vehicles.
Sixteen people were hurt and property took a big hit, so the Meghalaya government has now formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to get to the bottom of what happened.
Fifteen FIRs, 3 KSU leaders arrested
The SIT is digging into who started the chaos and making sure those responsible are held accountable.
Police have already filed 15 FIRs and arrested three senior leaders of the Khasi Students's Union (KSU), president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, and general secretary Reuben Najiar, who are now in judicial custody.
With tensions running high between Meghalaya and Assam, more than 3,770 Assam-registered vehicles got police escorts back home for safety.
Five masked men allegedly involved in the violence and random attacks on Assam-registered tourist vehicles have so far been identified.
