No more toll queues: Gadkari says highways will go fully automatic by end of 2025

India

Big changes are coming to your road trips—Union Minister Nitin Gadkari just announced that by December 26, 2025, vehicles will no longer need to stop at national highway toll plazas, as the government moves to roll out a fully automated toll collection system.
With ANPR cameras and FASTag tech, cars can zip through at highway speeds without stopping, and tolls will be auto-deducted from linked accounts.

Why does it matter?

No more waiting in long lines or slowing down at toll booths means less hassle for everyone.
This upgrade should cut down on traffic jams, save fuel, and make travel smoother—whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or daily commute.
Plus, with modernization projects already underway and a directive to upgrade over 1,000 plazas nationwide (including both private and NHAI-run ones) within a year, India's highways are set to get a major efficiency boost soon.
