Protesters at Jantar Mantar demand reservations based on economic need
India
On Friday, Jantar Mantar saw a big turnout as protesters rallied for changes to India's reservation system.
Mobilized largely through social media by the Instagram-based campaign Reservation Hatao Andolan, the crowd called for reservations and benefits like scholarships and fee waivers to be based on economic need, not caste.
Several protesters were detained by Delhi Police.
Push 'quota within quota' and benefits
Protesters want a "quota within quota" setup so that those most in need within reserved categories actually get support.
They're also pushing for a government review of how well reservations have worked over the past 80 years and want expanded benefits for economically weaker sections, like more fee waivers and fairer access to higher education.
