Shab-e-Barat 2026: Significance, date, and how to observe it
Shab-e-Barat, or the Night of Forgiveness, is a big spiritual moment for Muslims.
This year in India, it starts at sunset on February 3 and goes until dawn on February 4.
The night is all about seeking forgiveness, reflecting before Ramadan, and connecting with faith through special prayers.
How to pray on Shab-e-Barat
Muslims spend the night in prayer—starting with two Rakats Nafal after Maghrib (with Surah Ikhlas recited three times), then reading Surah Yasin three times for blessings and protection.
Many also perform Salat ul Tasbih, a unique prayer involving lots of remembrance.
Other key observances
Families visit graves to remember loved ones, light candles, share sweets and food with those in need, and sometimes fast during the day.
Homes and mosques glow with lanterns and diyas.
While some prefer quiet personal worship (which scholars like Darul Uloom Deoband encourage), others enjoy coming together as a community—even if that's debated.
