West Bengal government shuts 13 Kolkata hotels after deadly fires
India
After two tragic hotel fires killed 18 people in a week, the West Bengal government has shut down 13 hotels in central Kolkata for breaking fire safety rules.
These closures happened on Mirza Ghalib Street, Marquis Street, and SN Banerjee Road as officials move quickly to prevent more disasters.
Authorities order 16 hotels vacated
It is not just Kolkata: 16 more hotels have been told to vacate, and 50 others received show-cause notices for allegedly failing to meet fire safety norms.
Even outside the city, 29 hotels in other districts were flagged.
Common issues included expired fire licenses and no proper exits, with authorities stepping up checks to keep guests safe.
