EU to raise tariffs on imported steel

Business

The EU is about to make imported steel a lot pricier.
To shield local producers from a flood of cheap steel coming out of Asia—and in response to new trade barriers imposed by the US—the European Commission will propose slashing foreign steel quotas by nearly half next week, according to EU industry chief Stephane Sejourne.

Investors seem happy

Any steel imports above these new, lower quotas will face steep new tariffs, matching the US's 50% rate.
Investors seem happy: shares of big European steelmakers like ArcelorMittal and Voestalpine rose, with Voestalpine hitting its highest level in over two years.
The goal? Give European steel a fighting chance in today's tough global market.
