Das, who hails from Odisha's capital Bhubhaneshwar, is a 1980 batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He took charge as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India effective December 12, 2018. Das's tenure ended on December 10, 2024, handing over the reins to former Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra (IAS, 1990). Das is a postgraduate from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University.
