Amit Shah is a senior leader and former National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As of 2021, he is the Union Home Minister and the Minister for Cooperation of India. Born in Mumbai, Shah did BSc in Biochemistry from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and initially worked as a stockbroker and businessman. An RSS Swayamsevak since young years, he became an ABVP leader in college and then joined BJP in 1987. He successfully contested many local body polls and later entered the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1997. He has been a close associate of the former Gujarat CM and Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, since 1982. Shah is known for his efficient strategizing and is credited with establishing BJP in Gujarat. He was responsible for BJP's Uttar Pradesh campaign in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when the party and its allies won 73 of 80 seats from the state. As a result, he was declared the BJP President and was instrumental in increasing the party's footprint several-fold in national politics. He led BJP to win 303 seats in the 2019 general elections, establishing himself as the most successful BJP chief ever.
