Farooq Abdullah, born on October 21, 1937, in Soura, Srinagar, is a senior Indian politician and the Chairman of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC). He’s the son of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, an eminent personality in J&K politics, and the father of former J&K CM Omar Abdullah. Following in his father's footsteps, Abdullah became an active member of the JKNC founded by his father. He served three terms as the Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir (1982–84, 1986–90, and 1996–2002). He first assumed the post after his father's death in 1982 and was later elected to office in 1983. His government collapsed in 1984, but he was re-elected in 1986 with the Indian National Congress’s (INC) support; he held the CM post until 1990. He won the 1996 Assembly elections and became the Chief Minister once again. Also, he served as the Minister for New and Renewable Energy during 2009-14 as part of Manmohan Singh-led UPA government at the Centre. He’s a member of Lok Sabha from Srinagar. Abdullah and his party are strong campaigners for greater autonomy to Jammu & Kashmir and its special status.
