el-Toukhy's 'Woman Unknown' wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Fest
Woman Unknown, a Danish film by May el-Toukhy, just snagged the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The movie follows a woman trying to keep her wartime relationship with a Nazi secret during World War II.
El-Toukhy, behind the only feature film with a female director in the competition this year, says her film explores how women's bodies become battlegrounds and how some stories go unheard.
Arcel Best Actress, 'NAZA' Jury Prize
Mathilde Arcel, making her first film role in Woman Unknown, took home Best Actress.
Other major winners: Lee Chang-dong grabbed the Silver Lion for Possible Love; Ilya Khrzhanovsky was named Best Director for DAU; and John Malkovich won Best Actor for Wild Horse Nine.
The Special Jury Prize went to NAZA, a documentary exposing Israel's use of AI targeting in Gaza.
