OTT platforms aren't getting CBFC-certified, says government

Entertainment

The government has clarified that streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video do not need CBFC approval for their content. Instead, they follow the IT Rules 2021, which outline how digital content should be managed.
Minister L Murugan shared this update in Parliament, confirming that OTTs have their own guidelines to adhere to.

Why does it matter?

This move keeps digital releases separate from movies shown in theaters, meaning no extra hoops for online shows and films.
OTTs must follow a Code of Ethics, label content by age group, and handle complaints themselves first—before issues escalate.
The goal is quicker resolutions on matters like child safety or offensive material while maintaining creative freedom for creators and viewers as streaming becomes increasingly popular.
