A passenger train collided head-on with a freight train near Lalkhadan in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district on Monday evening, leaving four people dead and many others injured. The accident occurred around 4:00pm on the Bilaspur-Katni segment when the MEMU local train (No. 68733) collided with the halted freight train. The impact of the collision was so severe that it derailed several coaches of the passenger train.

Rescue operation underway
Railway, local administration, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have rushed to the site, and rescue operations are underway. "Railways have moved all the resources, and all measures are being ensured for the treatment of the injured," an official told ANI. Officials said many trains had to be canceled or rerouted as a result of the crash. Train services on the Bilaspur-Howrah route were completely halted, with multiple trains either canceled or diverted.

Possible cause of crash
The front section of the passenger train was completely damaged in the accident. The crash also caused substantial damage to overhead wiring and signaling systems. Technical staff are trying to repair and clear the track. Preliminary reports suggest a possible signaling failure or human error. According to India Today sources, preliminary investigation reveals that the accident occurred when the MEMU local train overshot a signal and collided with the rear of the stationary goods train.
