Ahmedabad's air pollution spikes to alarming levels post-Diwali
India
Diwali night in Ahmedabad saw air pollution skyrocket, with PM2.5 levels peaking at 888mg/m3—almost 60 times higher than the WHO's safe limit of 15mg/m3.
PM10 numbers were just as worrying, hitting 925mg/m3 in some areas, way above the recommended 45mg/m3.
Doctors warn of respiratory issues, viral infections
This pollution spike led to more people showing up with breathing issues after Diwali (cases jumped from 78 to 89).
Firecracker residue also coated plants and polluted soil, while animals struggled with respiratory problems too.
Dr. Rahul Jalan pointed out that such high pollution could trigger more viral infections, predicting a peak in cases about a week after Diwali.
